In fresh autumn conditions, the Kiama Junior Knight hosted nine games at Chittick Oval on Saturday.
In the first game of the day, the Knights Under 14 Girls League Tag Black team defeated Albion Park-Park Oak Flats 32-22, before the Kiama Reds team defeated Stingrays Gold 46-0.
The Under 16s League Tag team then suffered their first loss of the season, going down 28-4 to Milton Ulladulla Reds.
One of the highlights of the day, was the ‘local derby’ between the Knights Under 7 Reds and Blacks teams.
The sidelines were certainly alive and spirited as these two teams took each other on, in what can only be described as the ultimate in Saturday sport - kids having fun, doing their best and learning how to play rugby league in a supportive environment.
While the game was full of passion, it was also a game of four quarters packed with plenty of skill.
According to Glenn Gazzard, the Kiama Blacks showed how far they have come this season with a focus on running the ball forward and tackling low around the legs.
“Owen Wood showed his determination and strength with a couple of length of the field runs to tackle the Reds just metres away from their try line, while Hamish Williams used his height and size to plow through the Reds defence to score two tries.
“It was all smiles for other try scorers for the Blacks including Lucas Quinn, Jack Calcraft, Darcy Favorito, Owen Wood and Ellis Young who was awarded player of the match for our team,” said Glenn.
“It was a great game for the Blacks, with the team all working together and running the ball hard and chasing down their opponents until the final whistle.”
Glenn said that he was proud of his boys and commended the Reds who showed some natural talent and clever plays for the full match.
Reds Coach, Matt Clarke said it was a great team effort from the Reds who were down to just six players for the match.
“Jack Kauter and Oliver Nelson were outstanding in attack, running hard and straight to score six tries between them.
“Other try scorers for the Reds included Quade Nelson and Eddison Laird, while Jack Willetts worked hard in defence,” said Matt.
Max Clarke continues to improve for the Reds with some great runs, off-loads and support for team mates, and was awarded player of the match for his team.
The final score was Reds 32 to Blacks 28.
In other games, the Under 13-2s smashed Stingrays 46-4, the Under 10 Girls League Tag team defeated Warilla 28-8, the Under 12-2s Girls League Tag drew 12 all with Albion Park Oak Flats Maroon and the Under 12-1s Girls League Tag team defeated Stingrays 22-0 in a grand final replay.
Next week the Knights will host games from 9:00am through to 2:45pm on Saturday.
